Causes and Consequences of Water Seepage in Basement

Wet basements are common, specifically during rainy and winter season. Moisture seepage generally takes place through the floor and walls. Water generally goes into an underground room via holes, cracks, gaps or air movement. Some additional factors that cause flooding in the underground room are broken, clogged or improperly installed drainage system, leaky pipes, leaking windows, sewer water backup, etc.

Cracks in the underground room are generally caused by the hydrostatic pressure exertion. The hydrostatic pressure is caused by the increase in the water table. The increase in the water table generally takes place when the groundwater level rises. The increased water table causes the hydrostatic pressure which conclusively exerts pressure on the underground room walls and floor.

The increased pressure in the region then cause cracks in the basement foundation walls and floor. If left unrepaired for a long period of time, the small crevices turn into large cracks that allow water from outside to get into the underground room.

The Consequences of Moisture Seepage

Once the moisture gets into the underground room, it generally takes less time to cause mould, mildew, musty odour, wood decay as well as critical health problems. Once moisture gets into the foundation, it could peel off the wall paint and cause damp sports and put the structural reliability of the house in danger.

Also, water getting into the foundation can bring critical damage to the stability of the house and it could be vulnerable to the risk of collapsing anytime. Such situation would put the safety of inhabitants in danger. Furthermore, water and moisture in the underground room damages the items stored in the room.

The Solution to This Problem

The only way to get rid of the moisture seepage problem and its consequences is basement waterproofing. It is the most effective solution as it drives water away from the room and doesn’t permit it to go into the walls.

Furthermore, it can be applied either interiorly or exteriorly. Internal methods involve installing waterproof barriers (from the inside), weeping tiles and drains that turn the accumulated water away. The exterior waterproofing method involves excavation around the outdoor of the foundation. The exterior method safeguards the house against moisture seepage as well as all types of water damage.

Both techniques require materials and tools that are properly operated by waterproofing contractors, like us. The company has more than 25 years of experience in this field. Also, the company offers a wide-range of internal and external basement waterproofing solutions. These include sump pump installation, crack injection repair, French drain installation, etc.
